Biography

Always a Woodworker and an Outdoorsman
Michael has spent a lifetime discovering the satisfaction of working with his hands. Always a woodworker, he began with joinery and later became an architect the traditional way. Along the way, he mastered Windsor chairs, timber framing, woodturning, and brickwork - building masonry heaters and stone walls when special projects called for it.
A lifelong sailor, Michael fulfilled a dream in his fifties by buying a schooner, spending a year mastering the vessel entirely on his own, and officially becoming a captain in the process. This journey brought him to Maine, where he taught at WoodenBoat School, one of the world's premier boatbuilding and woodworking schools, honing his craft and his love for teaching.
Over the years, he has guided clients and students through complex projects - furniture, timber frames, and even belfry restorations - sharing skill, insight, and encouragement every step of the way.
Now, at his Bath studio, Fellowship of the Lathe, Michael teaches anyone eager and willing to learn - blending skill with imagination and the simple, lasting joys of woodworking: the feel of a tool in your hand, the rhythm of shaping wood on the lathe, and the satisfaction of creating something that lasts.

disclaimer - this description was written by Michael's amazing wife. He wouldn't claim to have "mastered" anything, as he experiences himself as a student of all crafts.
